本書著重各民族、各文化的特點和尊嚴的態度，究本溯源，根據史料，重新提出一種看法，以解釋西元前11世紀至6世紀的600年間，中原及山東半島一帶，社會性質的特點及其轉變，並闡明中國「封建」的本義，以呈現中國古代政治、經濟結構之萌芽和演進的狀況。
作者：杜正勝
專研古代中國史，出版《周代城邦》、《編戶齊民》、《古代社會與國家》等專著。其他論述如提倡生命醫療史而有《從眉壽到長生》，研究物怪而著《物怪故事解》，探索何謂中國而作《中國是怎麼形成的》。

1990年開始提倡新的歷史研究，與同儕創辦《新史學》，主張開發新課題，拓展新領域，相關討論集為《新史學之路》。

他的新史學思想分為兩個階段，第一階段增添歷史研究的內容，以下層人民補上層菁英，以社會文化補政治經濟。第二階段超越中國疆界的歷史研究，倡議同心圓史觀，建構臺灣、中國、亞洲與世界的歷史視野。

杜正勝對當前臺灣社會、政治與文化亦多所論述，建立臺灣主體性，論述見諸《臺灣心•臺灣魂》、《走過關鍵十年》。
